We are pleased to announce that Matt Saunders has now joined the board of Somerset Innovation + Design (SID) and we are continuously growing our team of volunteers and design advocates and welcome Matt’s multi-talented fresh approach to design and the promotion of Somerset as a place of design excellence.

Matt Saunders, is a graphic designer living in Charlton Horethorne, South Somerset. In 2012 the design studio ‘Theory Unit Graphic Design’ opened to specialise in logos, branding and creating marketing solutions for businesses who are looking to elevate their visibility in the market place.

Matt is fascinated by the capacity of symbols and graphic devices to convey meaning, and that with careful channelling they can communicate and distill the essence of an entire business, no matter how complex that business is. Matt’s also interested in how poor design can subconsciously affect a potential customer’s view of a business, and the extent to which this will colour their decisions as to where to take their custom.

In previous lives Matt worked in education, first in colleges and later as a secondary school teacher in Yeovil teaching ICT and graphic design. This was rewarding work but increasingly Matt felt the urge to get back to seeing the power of design at work in the commercial world.

Matt has also worked in the music industry since 1995 as a performing and composing musician and was signed to the record label 4AD for several years. He recorded many sessions including two Peel Sessions and other Radio 1 and 3 sessions. His music has been synched in films and television and he continues to compose music, incorporating music licensing as a service Theory Unit provides.

Matt said “I am very much looking forward to fulfilling my new role as SID committee member and furthering the good work SID is so effectively engaged in. I hope my combined experience in education, the music industry and the design world will bring a fresh and alternative voice to our work”.

If you are interested in becoming a committee member of SID or wish to discuss other forms of assistance then do get in touch.

We thank Matt for his dedication to the design sector and hope you all get a chance to meet him at one of our events.
